NHEP ACTIVITIES  

7/07/04 - NROC 2005 and 2006 Plans, plus Implementation Grants Awarded

Jennifer Hunter, Sally Soule (NH Coastal Program) and Frank Mitchell and Amanda Stone (UNH Cooperative Extension) met to discuss funding and program implementation activities for the Natural Resources Outreach Coalition (NROC) in 2005 and 2006. Later Dave Kellam met with  Frank and Amanda to review three proposals that were submitted for the 2004 Implementation Grant program.  The proposals from Dover, Stratham and Newmarket were approved. 7/14/04 - Rockingham Planning Commission Meeting

Jennifer Hunter attended a portion of the RPC meeting to view a presentation given by Fay Rubin of UNH/Complex System Research Center and Bill Salas, President of Applied GeoSolutions entitled "40 Years of Land Use Change in Rockingham and Strafford Counties". The presentation included a description of land use change from 1962, 1974, and 1998, the development of a model for projecting future land use based on historical change, and an update on GRANIT. Contact Jennifer Hunter for details.

7/21/04  - Public Outreach and Education Team (POET) Meeting

The goal of this meeting was to plan for the 2004 National Estuaries Day on September 25.  The group recommended conducting boat tours of the estuaries for coastal decision makers, such as Conservation Commissioners, Planning Board Members and municipal planners.  Tours will occur on Sunday, September 19 and Saturday, September 25 (National Estuaries Day).  Tour times have yet to be determined.  In addition to these tours, POET will promote other estuary education activities occurring in the Fall. Contact Dave Kellam for details.

7/22/04  - Newmarket Conservation Commission Presentation

Mark West, President of West Environmental, gave a presentation to the Newmarket Conservation Commission about using the new NHEP report, "Freshwater Wetland Mitigation Inventory for Nineteen Coastal Communities". This presentation is part of a 19 community tour to facilitate the use of the report.  Contact Dave Kellam for details.

 7/27/04  - Facilitation Workshop for NROC Staff

Led by Charlie French of UNH, this 6 hour training included information about facilitation basics, planning the facilitation process, meeting management, establishing ground rules, facilitation tools, and consensus building. Contact Dave Kellam for details.

 7/28/04  - Freshwater Wetlands Restoration Proposals Received

The NHEP received four proposals for a total of $150,000 in wetlands restoration and protection projects. The NHEP has allocated $100,000 for this RFP. A review panel consisting of NHEP staff, Management Committee members, and other local experts will review the proposals over the next month and select projects. Contact Phil Trowbridge for details.

7/30/04  - 2005 Local Grants Request for Proposals Issued 

An email announcing the annual grant program was sent to 175 people and 484 postcard announcements were mailed a week later. The RFP announcement will also appear on email listserve Plan-Link and in the Portsmouth Herald for three days.  The deadline for proposals is September 30, at 4:00 pm.  A review panel of NHEP staff and Management Committee members will be formed to select projects.  Projects must be completed by December 31, 2005.  To view the 2005 Local Grants RFP go the NHEP website. 8/11/04 - "Land Conservation Techniques for Municipalities" Workshop, 7-9pm, Selectmen’s Chambers, Farmington Municipal Office Bldg,  Farmington 
This workshop is organized by the Center for Land Conservation Assistance and funded by the NHEP.  It will emphasize early steps in organizing and implementing municipal land conservation.

8/12/04  - Marine Discharge Areas, Seminar, 6 - 8pm,  Wentworth Marina, New Castle
This seminar, organized by the Great Bay Coast Watch with funding from the NHEP, will be held in conjunction with the National Marina Day on August 14th. Ann Rodney from the US EPA New England and Jody Conner from the NH Department of Environmental Services will give presentations. Contact Ann Reid, GBCW, for details.

9/16/04  - NH Shellfish Resources, Seminar, 6-8 pm, Ashworth Hotel, Hampton Beach
This seminar, organized by the Great Bay Coast Watch with funding from the NHEP, will examine recent changes in NH's shellfish populations and will highlight current research.  Contact Ann Reid, GBCW, for details.

9/18/04 - International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the New Hampshire Coastal Program and Waste Management, Inc, 11 am - 2pm, at several coastal beaches & waterways
