NHEP ACTIVITIES

11/4 – 11/5/03 – Stormwater Management in Cold Climates Conference - Planning, Design and Implementation

Jennifer Hunter and Matt Craig attended this conference that featured 55 presenters and 375 participants from Norway, Sweden, Iceland, New Zealand, Canada, and twenty-two U.S. states.  Much of the information provided at this conference was directly applicable to many NHEP projects.  Conference proceedings can be viewed at http://www.cascobay.usm.maine.edu/proceed.html.

11/7/03 -  GBNERR Coastal Training Program Advisory Committee Meeting

Jennifer Hunter attended an advisory committee meeting for the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve’s (GBNERR’s) Coastal Training Program (CTP).  For this first meeting of the CTP Advisory Committee, committee members learned of the CTP objectives, reviewed the role of the Advisory Committee, and discussed the upcoming needs assessment and market analysis to be completed by the GBNERR's CTP Coordinator.

11/12/03 – Applications Received for Site Planning Roundtable

Matt Craig received applications from two towns to become pilot communities for the site planning process that will be presented during the site planning roundtable workshop on 12/15/03 (see below). Announcement of the selected community will be made in December.

11/13/03 – GBCW Annual Meeting

Jennifer Hunter was a participant on a panel featured at the Great Bay Coast Watch's Annual Meeting.  The panel discussed Senate Bill 70, which established a Commission to study the implications of combining wastewater treatment plant effluent from area plants into a regional system for discharge into the Atlantic Ocean.  Other panelists were George Berlandi (NHDES), David Sweeney (Town of Newington), Steve Jones (UNH), and Cynthia Copeland (Strafford Regional Planning Commission).  Panel members discussed the activities of the Commission, shared their thoughts on various wastewater treatment technologies and disposal options, and answered questions from the audience.

11/14/03 – Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) Meeting

TAC members and others compiled information on the location, seasonality, and abundance of critical species and habitats in NH's estuaries. This information will be georeferenced by a consultant for NHDES to produce environmental sensitivity index (ESI) maps. The ESI maps will be used for oil spill contingency planning and response.

11/21/03 – Distribution of the State of the Estuaries Report

Dave Kellam mailed 495 State of the Estuaries Reports in November.  In addition to individual requests, all state representatives, senators, planning boards and conservation commissions in the 42 towns of the coastal watershed received the report.
